School was out for the year and there is nothing to do for summer. All of the kids love to play outside riding bikes, playing hula hoop and swimming. Timmy Tortuga loves to run and play with his good friend Munkee Monkey. For Timmy’s birthday, his parents gave him a soccer ball. They also told him that he was going to play soccer at the local recreation center.

Timmy was so excited! He said “Thank you so much! I love soccer!”

Then he asked “What is soccer?” His dad, Mr. Tortuga, laughed.

“Soccer is a game that you play with this ball. You and the other players play against the other team and try to score a goal,” he explained.

“Oh,” Timmy smiled “that sounds like a lot of fun.”

The following Saturday Timmy and his parents went the recreation center and Timmy started playing soccer with his team mates.

“You can’t touch the ball with your hands unless you are the goalie,” said the team’s coach. “You have to kick the ball and work with your team mates to try to score a goal.”

Every week the team met at the recreation center and practiced. The day finally came and the team played against another team.

“Kick the ball, Timmy,” Mr. and Mrs. Tortuga cheered.

“Block the goal,” Mr. and Mrs. Monkey cheered.

The coach was really proud of all of the players. Everyone played and had a lot of fun. After the game, the players all lined up and shook each others hand in respect.

“Let’s go get an ice cream,” Mr. Tortuga said to Timmy “and if it is ok with Mr. and Mrs. Monkey, Munkee can come along too.”

Timmy ate a bubble gum ice cream and Munkee had a big banana split. Who ever would have thought a monkey would love a banana split?

Munkee Monkey, Tortoise and the hare.

Munkee Monkey woke up early one morning and asked his Mommy Monkey if she would take him to the library.

“Certainly we can go, do you have any book in mind?” she asked him.

“There is a new Space Munkee book that I want to check out.” The two of them finished breakfast and headed down to the library.

Lo and behold, guess who was at the library? J’mion the Lion, the famous story teller. “Hello there children!” J’mion bellowed. He had one roar of a laugh that made all of the children giggle.

Peggy Princess was there, and Tommy Turtle too.

“Gather ‘round children, I’m gonna tell you a story ‘bout the tortoise and the hare.” J’mion the Lion was very friendly and the kids all loved his stories.

“Wow, the tortoise and the hair” Tommy Turtle said. “My cousins are all tortoises, but I am a turtle. I can’t wait to hear more about one of my cousins.”

J’mion the Lion jumped up quickly and said “who jumps up fast and runs even faster?” The kids all looked around? “I asked, ‘who jumps up fast and runs even faster?’”

“Cheetah’s jump fast and run really fast too!” Peggy Princess said.

“And a gazelle jumps really high and runs really fast” said Munkee Monkey.

“I wish I could jump really high and run really fast” said Tommy Turtle.

“The Hare jumps really fast and runs even faster” J’mion the Lion told the children. “This is the story ‘bout a lil ole race between the tortoise and the hare. Let’s call that ole tortoise Telly and that rascally ole hare Harry.”

“So there they were one day out by the river enjoying the day. Telly was sitting back enjoying the beautiful sunshine and Harri was jumping in and out of the swimming hole making a big ole splash.

“I love this beautiful sunny day” Telly said “makes my shell all nice and warm. Ahhh!”

“Well I love jumping in the swimming hole! I love the warm water. You know I’m the best jumper and the fastest rabbit in all of Rabbitville.” Harry exclaimed.

“Ahhh…that’s nice.” Telly stretched a bit as she was relaxing in the summer sunshine.

“I bet nobody can beat me in a race, nobody!” Harry said.

“Ahh…yeah, you are pretty fast. I think you could win any race that you run.” Telly told him.

“We should race one day, I bet I would win!” Harry said excitedly. “I want to race you right now.”

Telly just wanted to lay out in the sunshine and enjoy the nice summer day. “I’m just going to lay here and enjoy the sun,” and she closed her eyes.

Just then Harry jumped into the swimming hole and splashed Telly with a big wave of water. “Ok, let’s race on Saturday. I bet I will win. I’m going to ask Mr. Beary to make the race for us and we can see just who is the fastest yet.”

“Whatever you say Harry,” and Telly dozed off to sleep.

“Now children, who do you think is going to be the fastest on Saturday’s race?” J’mion the Lion asked.

Munkee Monkey and Peggy Princess both said “Harry! Harry is the fastest!”

This made Tommy Turtle sad. “Aww…I want Telly to win!” he said.

“Ok, let’s get back to the story” J’mion the Lion said.

“There they were, everyone in town had gathered around to see Harry the Hare and Telly the Tortoise for the big race around town.”

“Ladies and Gentlemen. May I have your attention please” Mr. Beary said using his gigantic megaphone. “For the first time in Beariland, we have the fastest runner and highest jumper racing against a newcomer who has never raced before. We have a race between the tortoise and the hare! Gather around, the race is about to start!”

Telly smiled at Harry and said “Good luck friend! May the best racer win!”

Harry smiled and said “I know I am going to win.”

“On your mark, get set, go!” and they were off.

Harry bolted down Main street and was soon far ahead of Telly. Telly was running slow and steady and making her way down Main street.

Harry had run so far ahead of Telly that he could see the finish line in front of him, but could not see Telly behind him. “I have enough time that I can take a little break. I’m going to get a piece of pie from the Bananna Bakery while I wait.”

Harry went to the Bananna Bakery and ate a delicious piece of banana cream pie. “You better get back to the race if you are going to win,” Barry the Baker told Harry.

“Oh, I have plenty of time. Telly is so slow, she will never catch me.” Harry started playing checkers, which was his favorite game, with Barry the Baker. They played several games and a long time went by.

Suddenly they heard cheering and clapping out on Main Street. Harry thought to himself “I have not won the race yet, what are they cheering about?” He ran outside and saw a huge crowd down at the finish line cheering and yelling and clapping.

Harry the Hare raced down to the finish line. “What is going on? I did not win the race yet” Then he saw Telly the Tortoise with Mr. Beary.

“Folks, we have our winner of the big race! Telly the Tortoise!” Mr. Beary said.

Harry ran over to Telly. He was upset. “How did you win the race? I was so far ahead of you, there was no way you beat me.”

“Telly won the race fair and square” Mr. Beary laughed. “She kept on running, and I seem to remember seeing a certain someone in Mr. Barry’s Banana Bakery playing checkers.”

“Hip Hip Hooray! Hip Hip Hooray! Three cheers for Telly! Hip Hip Hooray!” the whole crowd chanted!

Now Tommy the Tortoise was so happy. “Yay! Telly won the race!” he said.

J’mion the Lion smiled as he looked at the children. “That ole hare was really fast, wasn’t he? Being fast gave him the quick head start, but in the end, the slow and steady tortoise kept on going even though she was not as fast as that rascally ole hare. Even if you are not sure if you can win, just keep trying!”
